The article examines landscape design as a tool for the regeneration of deprived urban areas in the context of contemporary urban transformations and the concept of sustainable development. The relevance of the topic is determined by the growing ecological, social, and spatial challenges of modern cities, which require integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to their resolution.
The evolution of the role of landscape design in shaping the urban environment is explored, from an element of urban improvement to a strategic instrument of spatial organization and ecological stabilization of territories. The significance of revitalization and regeneration processes of degraded urban spaces is defined as an essential component of sustainable urban development, ensuring the restoration of their functional, ecological, and social value.
International experience in urban revitalization projects is analyzed on the examples of the High Line in New York and the Gowanus Canal Sponge Park in Brooklyn, which demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating natural systems into densely built urban environments, adaptive reuse of infrastructure, and the implementation of nature-based solutions. It is shown that such projects contribute to the formation of multifunctional public spaces and improve the ecological quality of the urban environment.
Special attention is given to the Ukrainian context of post-war reconstruction, where landscape design is considered an important tool for the ecological and spatial regeneration of urban areas. The necessity of shifting from traditional infrastructure restoration to a comprehensive rethinking of urban development principles that incorporate natural components is substantiated.
It is concluded that landscape design is a key element in the creation of resilient, adaptive, and environmentally oriented urban systems under contemporary urban development conditions.
